MAKING DREAMS COME
TRUE
Having a dream come
true is wonderful. Helping to make that happen isn’t bad
either. These last two weeks, Pat and I have tested the truth of
both of these statements.
I have never known anyone who loves the snow more
than Pat does. She loves to see it. She loves to walk in
it. She is deliriously happy if she can walk in snow while
snowflakes are falling. I, on the other hand, don’t like
cold weather. And I am less than enthusiastic about the snow (to
put it mildly).
Almost ten years ago I took her to Colorado to spend
some time in the snow. We rode the Ski Train from Denver to
Winter Park, where our son, Steve, picked us up and drove us through
the snow back to Denver. We spent three nights in a rustic cabin
at Montezuma (10,400 feet, 2-3 feet of snow), before we flew back home.
From that time on, Pat has referred to that week as
her “Dream Vacation.” She has talked about it often,
and wished many times that she could go again. But other things
got in the way and we never could seem to make it back in the winter.
Although she didn’t think it would happen, I
was determined to make it possible for her to see the snow in the
mountains at least once more before our traveling days are over.
So we made our plans to go. And good friends Murray and Betty
Wise helped make the dream real by inviting us to their beautiful log
cabin near Creede, Colorado.
We spent some time with our son in Denver, then
spent three nights at the cabin with Murray and Betty, and
long-cherished friends Don and Lena Gibson. We were gone almost
two weeks, and we had a wonderful time.
We both enjoyed the fellowship with our friends, and
we both enjoyed the beautiful views. That would have been worth the
trip. But there was more. Pat got to walk in the snow, more
than once, and while snow was falling once or twice. She was
beside herself with joy.
And me? There were things I was not
enthusiastic about, but they faded into insignificance when I saw the
look on Pat’s face and the sparkle in her eyes. As we stood
in the snow together, she was grateful for a dream come true. I
was grateful I could help make it happen.
