LET’S SEE YOUR SONG

“He hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God:
many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the LORD.”
(Psalm 40:3).

Christians love to sing.  I learned that early in my Christian experience.  The little church where I grew up was short on “polish,” but long on a love for the Lord, which was expressed in song.  I remember only one sermon from those early years, but my mind and heart are filled with hymns , songs and choruses.  Although I have never been able to read music, I have always loved to sing.  I sang with gusto when I was a boy, but now that my voice is cracked and uncertain, I sing rather softly most of the time.

Unless I am alone.  In the car or truck, or out in the woods, when I am by myself, I often pull out all the stops and sing loudly of my faith.  I don’t know what a music critic might say about my singing, but it sounds great to me.  And it is a way to express what is inside my heart.

King David spoke of a song which he had as a result of the gracious work of God.  He was in need when he called on the Lord.  And the Lord heard and answered his prayer.  David testified to the saving work of God in his life, lifting him out of a horrible pit, setting his feet on a rock, and establishing his goings.

And David said, “He hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God.”  I can relate to that.  When I was twelve years old, God reached down and lifted me out of that horrible pit and set my feet on a rock and established my goings.  And He put a new song in my mouth too.  I still have that song.  A song of praise to the Lord, my God.

But then David said something strange.  He said “many shall see it...”  How can someone see our song?  People don’t see our song because we sing in sign language.  They see it because we live to the tune of an inner music.  “There’s within my heart a melody,” becomes more that words.  There really is a song and it colors everything we do.  Our lives, not just our voices, well up in praise to God.  And people see our song.

But sometimes we seem to lose the song.  We become so filled with the things of this life, that the things of the spirit are crowded into a little corner.  We push and pull to get what we want.  We begin to worry and fret that things won’t go right.  Our time and energy is taken up thinking about self.  And the song is forgotten.  We begin to look just like all the other people in the world.  And God loses praise.

When that happens, it’s time to revisit our roots.  We need to think again of what the Lord has done for us.  We need to read again such great passages as Psalm 40, and remember how we got the song of yesteryear.  And in remembering and repentance, we need to clean house and make room for the song.

When the song is so pronounced again that people can see it, the rest of what David said will be true:  “many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the LORD.”

Let’s let the world see our song, so they can know the Source, and blend their praise with ours.
